MUSINGS FOR OCTOBER, 2026 ~

Commandent # III — “Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh His name in vain.”

THE AMERICAN HERITAGE DICTIONARY OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE: “In Vain: foolish; without effect or avail; without due respect or piety; profanely.”

Today’s popular voicing of excitement or shock, “Oh, my god,” is just as vain an exclamation and Commandment violation as the longtime curse that follows the Lord’s name with “dammit,” and I never hesitate to admonish the (omg) speaker — even a stranger — with “Don’t take the Lord’s name in vain!”

 It’s then amusing to watch their immediate facial reaction expression that seems to silently say, “Hmm, I never thought of that.”

No one yet has told me to mind my own business, but for the first one that does, I am already waiting with my reply: “It’s more important that you mind God’s business!”
