High Strangeness Series Part Three:

The Puerto Rico Trench

Puerto Rico the island with a secret.

Just north of the island of Puerto Rico, the seafloor plunges into one of Earth’s most extreme environments, the Puerto Rico Trench. At its deepest, it measures an astonishing 27,480 ft, over 5 miles straight down. It is the deepest point in the entire Atlantic Ocean. The pressure down there is over a thousand times what it is at sea level.

Here, tectonic plates grind together. The North American plate is forced beneath the Caribbean plate, generating earthquakes, tsunamis, and strange acoustic anomalies. Yet, beyond the tremors and the enormous water pressure, a different kind of mystery has slowly unfolded. One that would begin to shake the scientific community.

In early 2020 one hydrophones placed deep in the trench’s abyss began to pick up a sound unlike anything the researchers had ever encountered. A rhythmic pulsation. It wasn’t random. In fact it was precise, repeating every 9 minutes and lasting for a full 45 seconds each time.

But what really sent a shiver down the spines of the research team was when they discovered sharp fluctuations in electromagnetic readings that accompanied the sound pulses. Further, the pulse was not a static noise. Rather it was directional, focused in a way that resembled sonar emissions. Unlike any typical biological or mechanical source, the pulses moved along the depth axis of the trench. It was as if something was tracking along the trench.

Whatever this something was it appeared to be living. The term biologically modulated sonar found its way into the scientific lexicon. The complete absence of light means that any creatures dwelling in the trench must survive in a world of absolute, crushing darkness.

Between 2021 and 2023, no fewer than six independent research initiatives including universities in Europe, Japan, and the United States reported a series of inexplicable data gaps within their recordings from the trench’s deepest, most remote zones.

In several instances, entire data sets disappeared without a trace. Instruments that had been designed to operate autonomously in the most hostile of environments deep beneath the ocean’s surface had failed in ways that couldn’t be easily explained. In some cases, the devices were recovered with hard drives that showed signs of complete magnetic erasing.

Surprisingly the temperature, pressure, and salinity remained within the expected ranges. The conditions, while certainly challenging, did not explain the total disappearance of data. The notion that the trench was hiding its secrets behind a shroud of interference was both alluring and alarming.

In 2024, an unprecedented deep sea mission was launched to try and discover the secrets of the unknown depths of one of the Earth’s most mysterious and extreme environments, the Puerto Rico Trench.

Crucial to the mission was the Pelagia X7, a cutting-edge autonomous underwater drone designed for the kind of silent deep sea navigation required to investigate the trench beyond 5 miles beneath the surface. The drone was equipped with advanced sensors for extreme depth navigation and the capability to transmit live feed video footage back to the surface in real time.

Soon the team was greeted by a sight that left them stunned in disbelief when a form ethereal and translucent passed in front of the camera lens. It was unlike any known marine species. No propulsion system was visible, in fact the body’s very structure defied traditional biological understanding.

There were no fins, no limbs, no obvious appendages of any kind. The creature’s surface shimmered briefly as it passed through the light beam, almost as if responding to the drone’s presence. Then in a blink it was gone, forever disappearing into the pervasive darkness.

Still more intriguing, the strange diaphanous entity emitted faint electrical signals, as though it was a creature of unknown biological circuitry. The expedition’s leader described the brief moment of visualization as “beyond comprehension.”

The elusive creature disappeared into the darkness of the deep but not before making contact with the drone’s hull leaving behind not just a simple biofilm but rather a complex interactive layer that could be examined for clues.

The painstaking task of analyzing the residue uncovered several findings that were nothing short of extraordinary. The first clue came when the residue was subjected to a basic electric charge in the laboratory.

The esoteric substance responded to the electrical stimuli. Tiny, delicate filaments began to form under the microscope, stretching out like frazzled threads, only to vanish moments later. The scientists were certain that the reaction seemed deliberate as though the substance was alive in a way that defied their understanding of biology.

Even though the residue was minuscule using advanced molecular biology protocols the scientists were able to analyze the creature’s genetic makeup. Once again the researchers were baffled when they discovered that the deposited substance lacked many of the key biological markers that typify life as we know it.

Upon further investigation, they identified what appeared to be the organism’s unique means of energy transformation. It is a unique process that apparently makes use of electrolytic vesicles, microscopic sacks that can store and release ions in a manner that suggests the organism might be tapping into an entirely different source of power as though the organism could somehow charge itself by manipulating the electromagnetic fields in its environment.

As the team continued their investigation, they began to realize that this wasn’t just the discovery of a new species; rather it was the discovery of a life form that might represent an entirely different archetype. Which leads to this thought: have they discovered something that was never meant to be found?
